The Ballad of Blaze Foley

(The Rolling River Band)
Colin Adams
This is the tale of singer/songwriter Blaze Foley.

Down in Arkansas, outside of the line, Michael David Fuller was born in 49.
He never held a day job and hell I don’t want mine, I wanna be like Johnny Cash…I’ll walk the line.

He wasn’t that well known, like Hank Williams and the rest, but if your talking songwriters he’s up there with the best.
The master tapes got stolen, but you can find them if you try, there’s even rumours going round they’re with the FBI.

CHORUS :

Now your wanted more dead than when you were alive,
Its such a shame you had to say goodbye,
Shot down in the prime of your short life,
Now your songs are all that’s left behind.

So much left unspoken, so much left to say, banned from all the Austin clubs they wouldn’t let you play.
Why did you have to leave us, why did you have to die?, I wanna be like Townes Van Zandt, to live’s to fly.

Blaze Foley met his death in a tragic twist of fate, the ground below him trembled as heaven opened up its gate.
Blaze knew his time was up, that this would be the end, shot down while trying to protect one of his old friends.

CHORUS:

Your gone but not forgotten, cause pictures never fade, we got the songs you left behind that we can always play.
I hope that heaven likes every one of your tunes, I hope the lord he knows that he took you far too soon.

So sing one for the underdog, sing one just for me, sing one for the prisoners and all the refugees.
But if you here a song that makes you want to cry, sing a song for Blaze Foley up in the sky”

CHORUS to end
